Race Recap: Boston Marathon 2017

I was doing SO well at logging my training online…until I wasn’t! I hope to backtrack on the last five weeks of my training for people interested in seeing how the Hanson’s Marathon Method works (and believe me when I say it does!) and a race recap from my half-marathon three weeks ago, but for now, I want to focus on getting all of my thoughts on completing my first Boston Marathon out while my thoughts are still fresh and legs are still sore!

My journey to Boston has been almost a year and a half in the making. It’s always been a pipeline dream for me, and although I ran cross country in college, after I graduated, I found myself running without much inspiration or joy. Making the conscious decision to train with the scarily tangible goal of a BQ was an intimidating one but the absolute best choice I could have made. While my second year of medical school was monotonous, stressful, and never made me feel great about myself, training for a marathon was exciting, rejuvenating, and without fail gave me a reason to feel like a rockstar every day. My hard work paid off, and I qualified for the 2017 Boston Marathon at the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in a time of 3:25:26.

I spent my summer studying for Step 1 of our Boards and my fall semi-training for a half-marathon (PR of 1:32:52 at the Mohawk-Hudson Half) and acclimating to our clinical rotations (surgery, pediatrics, and family medicine were up first!).

Starting in December, I started training for Boston using the Hansons’ Marathon Method advanced plan (I used the beginner plan for my BQ). Training went okay. The plan is tough and requires a LOT of running (I averaged 60-70 miles a week towards the end). The workouts are pretty repetitive, so I’m not sure if I’ll use it again for the next marathon I run (LOL why is my mind already there!), but it definitely works. I had some really high moments/weeks, and other times (especially towards the end of training) were rough. Still, I completed the training plan to a T for the second year in a row, and even though my race didn’t go as well as I wanted it to go, I can’t say I didn’t come to the start line a stronger, faster runner than I was at the start of the plan.

So. The race.

The Day Before

Unfortunately because I was on call at the hospital on Saturday, I couldn’t get to Boston until Sunday afternoon. My parents very, very kindly drove the six hours from Maryland to pick me up to drive another three hours from Albany to Boston on Easter. My dad dropped my mom and I off to pick up my bib and explored the expo for a bit. Thoughts: I was proud of myself for not buying a single thing. There were not enough free samples. 😛

I made fun of my mom for wearing Crocs. With fur. When it was 85 degrees out. And she had been up since 4:30AM driving to come watch me run for like 30 seconds total. I’m an ungrateful daughter!

After, we drove straight to our hotel in Woburn to hang out, relax, and have dinner. We stayed in a Residence Inn with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen which was great because I’m pretty particular/superstitious about what I eat the night before a race. Also, as a middle kid, any chance I get my parents all to myself is pretty exciting. 🙂 My mom made us an awesome dinner of salad and spaghetti, while my dad and I schemed about spectating strategies and I tried to get some studying in. My sister arrived in Boston on her flight from LA around 10:30PM, and I was so happy to see her!

Pre-Race

I woke up at 6AM and freaked out because the sun was shining oh so bright and holy moley is it possible that all the clocks in the hotel and all of our phones were wrong?! My race didn’t go off until 10:25AM, and we had planned for my dad to drop me off at the South Street lot to take the shuttle into Hopkinton at 7:30AM, so I had some time to kill. I ran around the hotel room and personally greeted every member of my family (including our dog, Jonas), with a “TODAY I RUN THE BOSTON MARATHON!” It was not particularly well received, especially by my sister who was sleep deprived AND jetlagged. 🙂

I ran downstairs to grab half a bagel and some peanut butter for breakfast, and got dressed. I was really between the singlet vs. crop top, but then decided today was as good a day as any to rock the crop top because of the predicted hot temps. My abs may be non-existent, but what the hey!

My dad dropped me off at the South Street lot (we got yelled at for trying to stop on the side of the road because we were in the left hand lane, not the right one :O #oops #sorrykindvolunteers), and I used the bathroom before hopping on to the school bus to take me to the Athlete’s Village! Which was a freaking porta potty palace, yet still took me a good half an hour to get through the line when I arrived! I briefly saw Erin and Colleen from the Albany Oiselle Volée and then saw Rachel (also Albany Oiselle Volée) in line for the bathroom. Rachel and I hung out together (aka sat in the shade people watching and pointing out all the people we knew from Instagram but were too afraid to introduce ourselves to) until our wave was called (white bibs were second, after the speedy red bib-wearing folks!). Walking over to the start, I met Lexi who I met on Instagram through the Lane 9 Project, as well as some other Oiselle Volée, including Angie.

The Race

The race went by FAST with all of the changing terrain and spectators lining the sidelines almost the entire 26.2 miles. Various friends from so many walks of my life had texted/reached out to me letting me know where they would be, and the excitement of looking for them in the large crowds really kept me going when times were tough. I saw my family twice (it would have been THREE times, but they missed me by a few minutes in Wellesley!), cross country coach from college, Alison, cross country teammate from college, Laura, other friends from college and med school, and the Oiselle gang scattered along the course.

She had texted me earlier in the morning with where she would be and this pic, but I didn’t have my phone on me past 8AM and unfortunately didn’t see it until after the race. But I DID spot her and her daughter Hazel during the race on one of the toughest hills! And it was magical.

I know people keep saying “last year was so much worse blah blah blah,” but as far as I’m concerned it was HOT out there. I took water/Gatorade at almost every station, most of it to pour on top of my head to stay cool (the water, not the Gatorade LOL). I’ve also never participated in a race this large before, so the logistics of even getting water amongst a huge crowd was new for me. Luckily there were aid stations on both sides of the road at every single mile, but each time, I had to come to almost a complete stop and weave in and out of other people trying to rehydrate, too. Might have *almost* taken down some peeps with me. SORRY. 30,000 people trying to run a marathon in a sunny 70+ degrees ain’t no joke! There were SO many times during the race that I’d look ahead of me and just be amazed by the sea of runners ahead. It was insane. I’ve NEVER seen anything like it. I’ve also never seen so many guys just unabashedly peeing on the side of the road mid-race. (Sorry not sorry for all the tangential writing).

Running is hard.

Unfortunately, my watch started bugging out around mile 15 and not recording my pace or mileage accurately. And let me tell you, when you’re at mile 15 of a marathon and already dying, you do NOT want your watch to be telling you you’re averaging 10 minute pace (…I wasn’t). I tried to play the fun game of calculating splits in my head, but when you’re mid-marathon loopy, that doesn’t go over well. Instead, I ended up playing the, “Okay, if you average the 30 minute pace you’re FEELING right now, looks like you probably won’t PR…” game.

I started hyperventilating/bawling with about a mile to go because of the sheer realization of what I was about to do. So many people all around me. Runners doing their thing after their own months and years of preparation and hard work. Spectators cheering for ME and sometimes by name (thanks, Angelica, for writing my name on my bib before I left in the morning)! I felt like a rockstar crossing that finish line.

Looking back on my splits, I’m surprised by my consistency at the start. People who were following later told me they thought it was just averaging splits along the way. Compared to the Shamrock Marathon, I felt a lot more stressed at the start of this race, which I attributed to the heat and rolling hills. I freaked out a little about not feeling too relaxed, and it may have bit me in the butt, but whatchagonnado. And although I knew I was dying towards the end, especially the last three miles or so, my pacing wasn’t as far off as I imagined it would have been. I mentally checked out a bit more than I usually do/know I shouldn’t do and wasn’t able to get into that super uncomfortable place I’ve trained myself to sustain in countless workouts, even in the last couple miles, which was disappointing after months of hard training. Blame it on the heat, the hills, or poor pacing, but it wasn’t my best race.

Still, I PRed! And know I’m much fitter than the time suggests. And if I choose to run Boston again next year, I should be able to get into it without a problem.

Post-Race Reflections

My main goal was to enjoy the experience and have fun, and as much as I was hurting, that I did! My favorite parts of the race were running through Wellesley and high fiving as many kiddos as I could throughout the entire race. Cross country and track were never “cool” sports in high school and I constantly had to defend how running IS a sport to people, and it was fun to see so much support out there for us football players, basketball players, baseball players runners in Boston.

I’m not sure if I’ll run Boston again next year or even what my next race will be (gotta focus on finishing out third year strong and rocking Step 2 of our Boards this spring and summer!), but one thing’s for certain: yesterday was a beautiful, unforgettable day. 🙂

Day 120/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: Not quite the time I was hoping for, but a PR and an incredible day nonetheless! What I Did: 8.01 miles in 1:19:50 (9:59 pace). Did not feel like running this morning at all. It was freezing, but I overdressed! :O

Tuesday, 3/7:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Strength 3 x 2 miles in 14:20-40 with 800 recovery  (marathon goal = 3:12-3:17))

What I Did:

AM:

3 mile warm-up

3 x 2 miles with 0.5 mile recovery in 14:31 (7:18, 7:13), 14:21 (7:14, 7:07), 13:57 (7:11, 6:46)

2ish mile cool-down

12.18 miles total

PM: 4.50 miles in 40:31 (9:01 pace) with Moira. Bonked haaaaaaard. :O

Wednesday, 3/8:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: OFF)

What I Did: Flexibility hot yoga with Laura, my future mother-in-law. My hamstrings hated it during it, but it was exactly what they needed!

Thursday, 3/9:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Tempo 9 miles at 7:26 pace (goal = 3:15 marathon :O ))

What I Did:

3.15 mile warm-up

9 mile tempo in 1:04:15 (7:08 pace; 7:40, 7:22, 7:06, 6:59, 7:12, 7:02, 6:57, 7:00, 6:52)

3.20 mile cool-down

15.35 miles total

Felt surprisingly awesome on the run! Took me a mile to really get on pace, but I ran according to feel and nailed it!

Friday, 3/10: 

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 7 miles)

What I Did: 7.44 miles in 1:14:46 (10:03 pace)

Saturday, 3/11:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: 6.01 miles in 1:01:55 (10:18 pace) before Pre-Cana with Phil. So much cold!

Sunday, 3/12:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Long 16 miles)

What I Did: Debated running the half-marathon I had registered for all week, but ultimately decided against it in order to see Wicked with Phil (a super nice Christmas present from his parents!). The show was at 1PM which was inconvenient in and of itself and it was going to be 15 degrees warmer (i.e. real feel of 12 degrees vs. like -5 degrees) in the afternoon, so I opted to run then. Luckily Fiona had been in Lake Placid where it was even colder and hadn’t run yet, so she met up with me to run 8 of my 18 mile long run with me (I think I ran like 3.5 by myself-we were moooving beause we were cold)! 18.04 miles in a blazinnnn 2:23:57 (7:58 average; 8:28, 8:08, 8:07, 8:15, 8:12, 8:06, 8:05, 7:51, 7:54, 7:49, 7:36, 8:06, 7:52, 7:52, 8:06, 7:55, 7:47, 7:26). Really happy with this run and can’t believe I dreaded it all week. Highly recommend the Zim Smith Trail if you’re in the area-the gravel was a great break for these legs!

Monday, 2/27:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

What I Did:

AM: A cold 6.37 miles in 1:03:05 (9:54 pace) before work. Legs felt dead! :O

PM: 4.52 miles in 39:37 (8:46 pace) with Moira (!) after work! Legs felt less dead. 😛

90 minutes of Bikram! Really feel like I’m improving in my form/flexibility/headspace, and honestly my muscles feel GREAT!

10.89 miles total

 

Tuesday, 2/28:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Strength 4 x 1.5 miles in 10:45-11:00 with 800 recovery (Goal = 3:12-317 marathon)

What I Did: I would have preferred to do this workout on the track because I find it easier for me to focus and run faster paces there, but the local college’s track doesn’t open until 6AM, and because I’ve been having issues with pacing, I figured I better get some practice off the track/treadmill sooner rather than later as Boston is quickly approaching! I have to run through downtown Albany to get to the bike path that I run on for workouts, and it can get a little sketchy sometimes, especially in the dark. It’s not my favorite, but I think it’s definitely worth being more on guard for a little bit until more runners are up and at it to keep me company on the bike path rather than retreating to the treadmill. Struggled with pacing at first (shocker), but I think I got down to a good pace towards the end:

2.52 mile warm-up down to the bike path

4 x 1.5 miles with 800 recovery:

11:19 (7:40 + 3:39; 7:33 pace)

10:56 (7:11 + 3:45; 7:17 pace)-interestingly, this was my 1.5 mile time trial time before my high school freshman season of cross country!

10:28 (6:56 + 3:32; 6:59 pace)

2.5ish mile cool-down (I’m too lazy to count up all the laps/splits right now…)

Guy at the Donut Shop: Do you have special plans for these donuts? Me: Why, yes. Yes I do. 😂 – Wasn't going to be able to see @pj28mont for his 30th (!) birthday today because I'm at the hospital all day (#somuchbusy here on inpatient psychiatry today!) and then on call at the psychiatric crisis unit from 5-11 tonight, so made a pit stop on my cool-down home to @ciderbellyofficial and delivered these tasty treats to the law school before Phil's 8AM class! Seeing each other everyday with our school/work schedules can be challenging, but we can usually make it work, even if it's just studying in neighboring cubicles or a quick donut handoff! 📚🍩🤝❤️ ••• Day 72/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: 4 x 1.5 mile strength workout along the bike path started off kinda slow-ish (tryna get a handle on this pacing business!) but hit my goal paces (10:45-11:00) for the final 3 sets: 11:19, 10:56, 10:50, 10:28.

Wednesday, 3/1:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: OFF)

What I Did: Flexibility hot yoga class that was more flow than flexibility, but whatcha gonna do.

Day 73/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: When your flexibility hot yoga class has a substitute teacher and it ends up being more strength work and less stretching than you anticipated. And then you get frustrated that you're frustrated about that (and because you're being a lazypants!) because, ya know, that's not the point of yoga. 🤦🏻‍♀️😥😂 – Rest day of sleeping in, reflecting and praying on this first day of Lent, inpatient psychiatry rounds, my first time seeing electroconvulsive therapy, listening to a nurse practitioner student's presentation on the role of ketamine in treating major depressive disorder, role playing motivational interviewing with another student and psychologist, my own doctor's appointment, some errand running, and finally yoga before dinner, some studying, and settling down this evening. 🌪🌪🌪 – Unfortunately, didn't make it to church to receive ashes (#badcatholic), but in my defense, Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, and today was crazy busy! ☹️ However, I am trying to pray more this Lent by participating in a 40/40/40 prayer challenge: praying for 40 intentions for 40 people over the 40 days of Lent. If there's something on your heart that I can pray for, please submit it (with your name or anonymously) on the Google Doc linked in my profile!

Thursday, 3/2:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Tempo 9 miles at 7:26 pace (goal = 3:15 marathon :O ))

What I Did: Ugh. This day/workout/life! Got out of work really late, had a friend who was going to pace me bail on me last minute, and it was already dark by the time I headed out. At the start of my tempo, my watch was not in the mood and was telling me I was running a “blazing” 9 minute pace when I knew I was running at least a minute and a half faster. I was already on edge because I was nervous about my first 9 mile tempo, so I decided to go try the workout at the gym rather than bust myself to be confused about pacing the whole time and then feel badly about how I was running “slower” than I was supposed to go. So, essentially, did a 6 mile warm-up, 9 mile tempo in 1:04:17 (7:09 pace, suckaaaaaas), and quick 1 mile cool-down home for 16.01 miles total, i.e. too much for a rando Thursday!

Day 74/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: This week has been really meh for a variety of reasons, and for my OWN mental health, I really needed a good workout today. My tolerance for nonsense was pretty much at zero, so when my watch started acting up from the start of my dark #temporun outside, I got pissed, ran home, threw on the @oiselle crop top singlet that I've been mustering up the courage to rock (slash patiently waiting to wear when abs magically appear, whichever comes first 💁🏻) for an extra bit of confidence, marched myself to the gym, and made that tempo run mine. 😈 9 miles in 1:04:17 (7:09 pace) and a whopping (and unexpected) 16 miles total. Got a bunch of confused looks and one "You go girl!" in response to repping the #sportsbrasquad, but really, I was beyond the point of caring. And it was liberating. 🏃🏻‍♀️💪 #strongnotskinny

Friday, 3/3: 

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

What I Did: Got out of work hella late again and had dinner plans, so only had time to get 3.62 miles in, but because of the way Thursday’s run went, I didn’t sweat it like I usually would. Crazy winds!

Saturday, 3/4:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 10 miles)

What I Did: 8.26 miles easy (but faster than my usual easy pace!), partly by myself, and partly with Erin, Allison, and others from their running team in some brutal wind and cold. Probably could have/should have run a little farther, but this week is a down mileage week anyway, so I’m not stressing.

Sunday, 3/5:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 10 miles)

What I Did: 6.58 miles in 1:03:46 (9:41 pace) with Phil. Could have (should have?) run farther, but I was getting hungry on our run!


Total Weekly Mileage = 57.82 miles

Total Boston Training Mileage = 575.68 miles

Down 8ish miles from last week-I’m not sure if that was too much of a jump down (should have probably been closer to 5), but does 3 miles really make that much of a difference? My guess = probably not.

Monday, 2/20:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: Pre-work 8.08 miles (1:24:47; 10:29 pace) felt like death. I thought about turning back home a million and one times…and talked myself out of it a million and one times! 😛 Also got in 90 minutes of Bikram after work and my muscles feel awesome!

Tuesday, 2/21:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Strength 6 x 1 mile with 400 recovery (5k goal of 19:30-20:00))

What I Did:

AM: 3.20 miles in 32:12 (10:03 pace); Legs felt a MILLION times better than yesterday, but still a little dead. Contemplated what would happen if I was totally burned out with Boston in 8 weeks. :O

PM: Strength Workout

1.48 mile warm-up

6 x 1 mile on the track at UAlbany. There was still some ice/snow on the track so I spent a lot of my 24 laps on the track weaving in and out of lanes, but for some reason, my watch would record a mile split on my final straightaway each time, i.e. before I hit four laps. I’m not really sure which times are correct, but I’m going to go with the slower ones so I don’t get too cocky, but here are my times for future record, in the following format: time at 4 laps (mile split on watch):

My body felt good, but the conditions weren’t ideal and my stomach really began to bother me towards the end.

Friday, 2/24: 

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 7 miles)

What I Did: 7.05 miles with Luke at the Pine Bush (1:01:18; 8:41 pace)

Saturday, 2/25:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: Moved my long run up a day early so I could run in Saratoga, a place I’ve wanted to run for a while with Fiona! Did my first 6.5ish by myself before Fiona met up for 10 more followed by brunch to make for such a lovely day! 17.07 miles total in 2:21:34 (8:17 pace; 8:36, 8:03, 8:00, 8:07, 7:59, 8:15, 8:46, 8:18, 8:14, 8:32, 8:19, 8:13, 8:14, 8:41, 8:40, 8:08, 7:49). My legs felt awesome towards the start, so much so that I had to force myself to more consciously control my stride at 8 minute pace, but I fizzled a bit for miles 14 and 15. I’ve gotta get a better handle on nutrition the night before and during runs. My last minute Powerbar Gels I grabbed from the depths of my pantry were definitelyyyy expired… 😛

Sunday, 2/26:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Long 16 miles)

What I Did: 7 miles in 1:07:07 (9:35 pace) at Hampton Manor Town Park…which I do not recommend for running. I went to flexibility hot yoga class after at a different location than I usually do and because I was headed to East Greenbush anyway, I thought I’d check out a spot that was recommended by the local newspaper for running. I made it work with running out on the main road and then getting some killer hills in, but I won’t probably go there again.

Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom you may not have known even existed."-BKS Iyengar ••• Day 70/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: Not a yogi by any means, but I've really enjoyed the classes I've been going to this week and wish I usually had this much time to focus on stretching, reflection, and self-care. Also, substitute running for yoga, and the quote works beautifully! 7 windy, snow flurrying shake-out miles with some hills + flexibility hot yoga class. 66 miles total this week. 🙆🏻🏃🏻‍♀️🌪

Still playing catch up on the training log. I guess the long hours on OB really threw me off! I regret not being more on top of posting about my daily training because I only post a snippet of it on Instagram and now, obviously, I don’t remember what was going on in my head/how my body felt three weeks ago. But, alas, hopefully I’ll learn from this!


Monday, 1/30:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

Tuesday, 1/31:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Speed 3 x 1600 in 6:20-6:30 with 600 recovery (5k goal of 19:30-20:00))

What I Did: Swam 2150 yards in 35:31 (1:39/100 yd). I think I made the choice to only do one workout this week because of the crazy night float scheduling, so I skipped my speed workout this week.

Wednesday, 2/1:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: OFF)

What I Did: 2.30 delirious miles (22:19; 9:43 pace) with Moira after the longest day of my life!

Day 45/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: A busy last night float shift (Foley balloons for induction of labor and magnesium prophylaxis for preeclampsia galore + a crazay middle of the night c-section for HELLP syndrome) ➡️ 2 hour power nap ➡️ reviewing for THREE different presentations this afternoon ➡️ 6 hours of class ➡️ 2.5 mile catch-up run sesh with @moiraleigh03. 🌃👶🛌💻👩🏻‍⚕️🏃🏻‍♀️ ••• Pretty amazed I made it through the past few days still with a smile on my face, thanks mostly to the diligent, kind, and rockstar team I was working with! Had to compromise on my workouts a bit, but I'm proud I still got some miles under my legs everyday. Flexibility is essential in this field and with #marathontraining, and tomorrow is a new day. Now, bring on the 4 day weekend! ✌️

Thursday, 2/2:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Tempo 7 miles at 7:26 pace (goal = 3:15 marathon :O ))

What I Did: Not a great day for me (see below). 7.14 miles.

Day 46/120 of #bostonmarathon2017 Training: Not my most favorite day. Our local track has been closed the past week, so I drove to the nearby university's track to tackle my speed workout only to find it was iced over. After failing miserably at maintaining 5k pace on the path looping around campus, I compromised for marathon tempo pace, which also didn't go over so well. So basically, I ended up doing 7 miles easy…before finding out my @gopro was stolen. 😐😐😐 ••• I never would have spent so much money on a little toy camera, but I won mine in a raffle while volunteering at a St. Baldrick's event a couple years ago. Trying to decide whether I should buy a new GoPro or not sparked a great conversation with my fiancé about why I even have a running Instagram in the first place. Is it self-promotion? Racking up likes? Gaining followers? I was disgusted with myself for a hot sec until I realized those things are NOT my main motivation. Like anyone, I can get distracted by the numbers, but what I LOVE about this little "square" community is 1) the connections with inspiring runners and people in the medical field I've made, 2) having a creative space to post fun pics and my reflections on school and running each day, and 3) the opportunity to share the feasibility of balancing a busy and productive work life with competitive recreational running. I would run out of fingers and toes counting the runner friends I've "met" on Insta before logging miles with in person and fellow students who have told me I'm not the only one struggling (and occasionally thriving 🙂) in grad school. For these reasons, I'll keep enjoying Insta…even if the pictures require a bit more creativity while I save up some cash for a new camera! 😉 Happy Thursday, friends! May we always remember that things are just things and what really matters is our relationships with others. 💕

What I Did: 11.13 miles total (9:05ish pace) as part of the ARE’s Pancake Run with Tiffany and Yaowei!

What I Did: 10.39 miles (1:31:11; 8:46 pace) with lots of Sister Birds for a bRUNch hosted by Rachael Austin! Running with friends this weekend was exactly what I needed.

Monday, 1/16:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

What I Did: 7.58 miles in 1:16:07 (10:02 pace). My legs felt totally trashed after yesterday’s run, so I was surprised that I wanted to get out there today (except our loooong work day that felt like SUCH a Monday makes it less surprising).

Tuesday, 1/17:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Speed 4 x 1200 in 4:42-4:50 (5k goal of 19:30-20:00))

What I Did: Didn’t feel as strong as I wish I could on this run, but in retrospect my paces were pretty good: 6:08-6:25!

1.8 mile warm-up

4 x 0.75 miles with 0.25 miles rest on treadmill: 4:49, 4:45, 4:37, 4:36 (skipped last 0.25 rest because I was readyyyy to get off that darn treadmill!)

2.53 mile cool-down

8.08 miles total

What I Did: 6.18 miles in 1:03:58 (10:21 pace). Friday runs are always the toughest after a long week of hard runs! Got out a little late due to an emergency c-section, but what a way to end the OB portion of this rotation!

Saturday, 1/21:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 10 miles)

What I Did: 10.07 miles in 1:27:52 (8:43 pace). Got in 4ish miles on my own, then did the last 6 with Fiona (@adktrigirl), which was the first time meeting her! Ran substantially faster with her than on my own (was rocking the 9:30-10 minute pace, then ran 8:18, 8:24, 8:24, 8:06, 8:06, 8:02 with Fiona LOL), but legs felt okay!

Sunday, 1/22:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: Got ditched by my friend Luke and re-planned to run with Phil who also ditched me for more sleep, so did this one solo! Whenever I run by myself, I’m pretty sure I just default to a slower pace: 8.50 miles in 1:23:46 (9:51 pace).

Monday, 1/2:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

What I Did: 6.43 miles easy in 1:05:26 (10:10 pace)-I ran a lot on some packed snow around Buckingham Lake, which didn’t help me run a faster pace. 😛 Legs are definitely starting to feel the mileage already, but it’s nice to have four whole non-“workout workout” days before Tuesday speedwork tomorrow! Also fell a ton and gave my legs a workout while attempting to ski today. :O

Tuesday, 1/3:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Speed 6 x 800 in 3:10-15 (5k goal of 19:30-20:00))

What I Did: Holy moley. This workout kicked my butt. My appetite has been really lame lately (this always seems to happen when I kick my training in high gear for some reason :/ ) and definitely have not been eating foods that are good for me or nutritious, and honestly, probably not enough food in general. My stomach was bothering me since I woke up, so I ate bland foods (i.e. two bagels and two bananas for breakfast and lunch), but it was still not great when I stepped on the treadmill after orientation for our first day of OB. I got cramps by the fourth interval and was making pained faces up the wazoo, but I magically got it done!

2.5 mile warm-up

6 x 0.5 miles with 0.25 mile rest on treadmill: 3:12, 3:11, 3:04, 3:06, 3:02, 2:58

1.5 mile cool-down

8.5 miles total

 I’m anticipating a LOT of treadmill running over the next 6 weeks because of limited sunlight in the winter time and our hours are 6-5 or 6 each day. We also have half a week of night float which should be…fun. 😛 Can you tell I’m already scared?!

2 mile warm-up to the gym and some on the treadmill

6 mile tempo in 43:18 (7:13 pace): 7:30, 7:25, 7:19, 7:14, 7:05, 6:42

2.5 mile could-down home

10.5 miles total

Tried to add in some hills to simulate elevation changes and to make the second treadmill run of the week more interesting mentally, but it felt HARD, so that didn’t last too long. Still, felt like a great effort with negative splits!

Friday, 1/6:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 6 miles)

What I Did: Crazy day at the hospital on OB made for interesting nutrition choices. We have to be at the hospital by 6, so I’ve been waking up and eating breakfast by 5. I was in a c-section and then a vaginal delivery and then got to watch a circumsicion, so I didn’t eat lunch (lame-o bagel with peanut butter…my stomach is too sensitive when it comes to running!) until 3PM, 10 hours after breakfast! Had plans to run with Tiffany, and holy moley I honked HARD. 3.49 miles total (33:56; 9:44 pace), but I now know I need to be a bit smarter (sneaker?) about eating in between fun events!

Saturday, 1/7:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: 8 miles in 1:06:07 (8:16 pace) with Erin and Rachel! Hadn’t seen those girls since the half-marathon in October, so it was nice to catch up and hear about their lives and how their fall marathons went. I tagged on for 8 of their middle miles (they did 15-16 miles, I think), and man we were moving, but it felt great! My default pace is usually like 10 minutes so it was good to get some variety in there with some nice company. 🙂

Sunday, 1/8:

(What I Was Supposed to Do: Easy 8 miles)

What I Did: Couldn’t sleep last night (exciting things and announcements to come!), so when I finally gave up at trying to go back to bed at 6, I decided to just get my run over with even though it was snowing and, like, a real feel of 6 degrees. Got in my 8.14 miles (1:15:15; 9:15 pace) which was good given the snowy bike path that was surprisingly not too slick.


Total Weekly Mileage = 45.06 miles

Total Boston Training Mileage = 137.25 miles
